Truro Cathedral Music

Choral Scholars

Choral Scholarships were first set up at the Cathedral in 1995. In addition to the stipend, the Chapter provides accommodation for the scholars who sing join the lay vicars to provide the alto, tenor and bass parts of the choir.

The Gentlemen of the Choir are a lively, sociable group and in addition to the many musical activities undertaken by the choir, there is a strong social life and tradition.

So far most Choral Scholars have been in their ‘gap’ year between school and university or Music College. Choral Scholars have gone on to be members of the choirs at St John’s, King’s and Trinity Colleges Cambridge and Magdalen College Oxford. Others are now studying singing at Music College. Choral Scholars wishing to sing in Truro for a year after university are also warmly welcomed. So far Choral Scholars have been recruited not only from Britain but also from Holland, South Africa and the USA. Similarly any prospective candidates for the Organ Scholarship should contact the organist for further details.

Former Truro Organ and Choral Scholars have recently been appointed to the following posts:

Assistant Organist, Chester Cathedral; Assistant Organist, Sheffield Cathedral; Assistant Sub-Organist, St Paul’s Cathedral; Assistant Director of Music, St Chad’s Cathedral, Birmingham; Lay Clerk, St George’s Chapel, Windsor; Organ Scholar, Queen’s College, Cambridge; Organ Scholar, New College, Oxford.
