For much of the winter period the Stone masons and Stone Conservators will be working in rather inhospitable conditions. Bitter winds and driving rain will make their job a tough one.
However some jobs are warmer than others! Using high pressure jets that spray steam out at 140 degrees C to clean the stone makes it feel more like July than January!
The reason for cleaning the stone is that it exposes faults and hidden cracks hidden under years of grime and pollution. This means a second survey is required so that the schedule of works can be updated.
Before and After. This is an image of one of the north tower spirelettes in mid-clean. One half pristine and one not!!!
