Online Advent Course - 'From Now On'

'From Now On' is a five-week online course taking place on Wednesday evenings from 19:30 - 21:00 on 18, 25 November and 2, 9, 16, 23 December.

The course will be taught by Rachel Mann, a priest, poet and author, and offers discussion points, biblical reflections and prayers based on short excerpts from an unlikely source - the hit 2018 Hollywood film 'The Greatest Showman'.

A key question asked by The Greatest Showman is, ‘What does hope and love look like in a world which so readily tramples on our dreams?’ It frames its answer through the lens of Barnum’s circus performers, those whom our society consider outsiders, either because of poverty, class, disability, ethnicity or visual stereotyping. In the film, Barnum’s Circus becomes a home for ‘misfits’ and outsiders in a prejudiced world, forming a new community of hope and love. This resembles Jesus’ ministry in the gospels in which he repeatedly demonstrates how those society considers ‘outsiders’ are ‘centre-stage’ in God’s love, a powerful indication of God’s priorities.

In this Advent course there is an opportunity to explore the meeting-points between popular culture and faith. When the Greatest Showman was released in 2018 it resonated with the mood of an uncertain and fearful world in need of joy, celebration and hope. Arguably as we enter Advent 2020 in a world dominated by a global pandemic which continually heightens and exposes the deep inequalities in society, the themes explored in this film and course are all the more relevant to our times.

This online Advent course will be conducted via Zoom. Please email Rev'd Elly Sheard to book your place by clicking the book now button below.
