Organ Recital - Shaun Ward

This Organ Recital will be given by Shaun Ward from St Laurence's Church, Ludlow. Shaun studied organ and harpsichord at the University of Huddersfield, gaining his BMus(Hons) in 1999 and MA in 2001, winning prizes for both degrees. As a soloist his work includes regular recitals as part of the Hereford Cathedral Summer series; recent venues have included The Queen’s College, Oxford and Seés Cathedral in Normandy. After working at Leeds Parish Church and Hereford Cathedral, Shaun became Director of Music at Holy Trinity Church, Hereford. He rekindled the choral tradition, taking the choir on a number of tours in the UK and Europe. His interest in historic buildings led him to work in an architectural practice, and he completed an MSc at Bath University in the conservation of historic buildings.

From 2007-2019 Shaun was Director of Music at Ludlow Parish Church. Under his direction the choir broadcast regularly on BBC local radio, recorded a CD, as well as singing services at Gloucester, Hereford and Bristol Cathedrals. In 2014 he became Artistic Director of the Ludlow Arts Summer Festival, creating an annual programme of high-quality classical concerts, and directed performances of Vivaldi’s Gloria, Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle, Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, Durufle's Requiem and Handel’s Messiah. As curator of the famous Snetzler organ, Shaun oversaw the further restoration of the instrument, as well as promoting a popular series of organ recitals and the production of a DVD celebrating the organ’s 250th anniversary; he also facilitated the procurement of a Steinway Model D concert piano. He also served as Clerk of Works, supervising a major programme of conservation to the building and its historic treasures.

In his spare time in recent years, he has enjoyed cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats, and completing his first 10k competitive runs; last year he has launched a new company, the Shropshire Hills Distillery: Ludlow Gin has already been awarded many prizes, and grows from strength to strength.

Truro Cathedral has one of the finest organs in the country. Built by Father Willis specifically to fit the acoustic of the building, its range, depth and power are truly awe-inspiring.
The weekly Friday lunchtime series runs from March to October and each recital lasts around 50 minutes. These are completely free to attend - donations to support the cathedral's music are appreciated.
