Friends Support St Mary’s Aisle Appeal

External Stone Pelican carving external to St Marys Aisle at Truro Cathedral

The Friends of Truro Cathedral have donated £10,000 to the St Mary’s Aisle Appeal, in addition to the £10,000 they gave last November. This substantial contribution is one of the reasons why we are now very optimistic that the repair and refurbishment of the Aisle, the most historic part of the cathedral, will be able to begin this year. The pelican (pictured) is just one of its unique features. Major repair and restoration projects like this are funded through a mix of grants, donations and gifts in Wills, and the Friends have been very supportive throughout.

As Fundraising Lead, one of the pleasures of my job is attending the Friends coffee mornings on the second Wednesday of each month. Everyone at the cathedral is grateful for all the Friends have done, and continue to do, to raise funds to maintain and improve the cathedral. Their donations to St Mary’s Aisle are just one example. Past projects that they have supported include the resurfacing of the car park and improvements to the toilets.

The Friends are one of several groups that people can join to get involved in cathedral life and get to know each other at the same time. They include the Mothers’ Union, Truro Cathedral Music, and the Creation Care Group, for people who want to take action on climate change and the loss of biodiversity. The Christian Meditation Group, Bellringers and Sewing Guild also welcome new members. Find out more at the “Get Involved” noticeboard in the North Aisle, near the Jesus Chapel.

Joining a group is a great way to make friends and make a difference. To explore whether The Friends of Truro Cathedral is the right one for you, why not pop along for a coffee? It’s a lovely sociable way to spend a morning.
