The Journey of the ‘Coronation Choristers’

Truro School and Truro Cathedral are pleased to present this film that shows the incredible journey of our seven ‘Coronation choristers’ Millie, Evie, Imogen, Chloe, Lowenna, Bryher and Oriel.

The film documents their response to the initial invitation to join the Coronation Choir for the Coronation of Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla on the 6th of May 2023, their experience of singing at the Coronation and returning to Cornwall to overwhelming support and pride from the Cornish community.

The girls sang with the choirs of Westminster Abbey and HM Chapel Royal Choir, St James’s Palace. They also joined young girl choristers from Methodist College, Belfast, making history together as the first female choristers to sing at a coronation.

This was an incredible accolade for the girl chorister programme led by Truro Cathedral and Truro School since their installation in Truro Cathedral Choir in 2015. The close working partnership between the School and Cathedral allows the education and training of choristers and offers choristership opportunities for musically talented children of any background.

Simon Robinson, Interim Dean and Canon Missioner at Truro Cathedral, said, “Watching the Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla on the live stream in Truro Cathedral was really exciting. The ceremony, the symbolism and the history unfolding in front of my eyes was truly memorable. It was made even more so by seeing our seven girl choristers in the choir. As a community, we are so very proud of them all, of their hard work and dedication and of their being amongst the first women ever to take such an active part in a Coronation ceremony. A massive thank you to them, to their families and to the choir staff who were with them, for everything that they did. A great example of our partnership with Truro School, is something to really celebrate and be proud of.”

Andy Johnson, Head of Truro School, commented, “We are immensely proud of all our choristers and are delighted that these seven girl choristers were able to represent their School, their Choir and Cornwall in such an incredible setting. Their hard work and dedication to delivering the best possible performance on the day were made all the more impressive that some of the girls were just weeks away from sitting their A-Level examinations. That this historic achievement was possible is a testament to the strength of the choristership pathway offered by Truro Cathedral and Truro School. Having it showcased and celebrated on the most global of stages was a very special and well-deserved moment for all of the team and choristers involved.”
