Easter Sunday: The Easter Vigil and the Eucharist of the Dawn

After the darkness and the gloom of Good Friday, comes the light of Easter Day, and this special service takes place at 06:00 in readiness for the dawn sun to shine. The service captures the moment when Mary Magdalene saw Jesus in the garden on Easter Day. A fire is lit and blessed, a flame from the fire lights the Easter candle, and the great Easter Proclamation, or Exultet, one of the most ancient hymns in the Christian tradition, is sung. There are readings and then the first Communion of Easter. The early start sets the tone for a joyful day of proclaiming the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
