International Day of Peace 2026: Invest in Peace - For Everyone, Everywhere, Every day

The theme for this year’s International Day of Peace reminds us that peace-making is a task for everyone. Even very small actions can make a huge difference in bringing peace. The United Nations suggest actions including sharing stories of peace and hope, much needed in this fractured and fragile world that cries out for peace.

The Bible narrative tells of a God who is peace, who gives that peace to people in a way that is unlike the peace we may encounter in the world. In the words of the prophet Isaiah, he is the prince of peace. This peace is a gift that we can share with those around us, a gift that can make a big impact, as we demonstrate the difference the peace of God makes.

What might you do to share peace with others? Perhaps you could listen to someone who needs to talk or help a friend or neighbour who is struggling. Peace is a scarce commodity at times, and sharing a word of hope and encouragement can bring peace to the most challenging of circumstances.

In the Church of England, we use a prayer called Compline, or night prayer, words to end the day and offer it to God. As we pray, we say together, “In peace we will lie down and sleep, because you alone Lord make us dwell in safety”. To mark this International Day of Peace, as you share hope and peace with others, may you know the peace of God, the prince of peace.

Today (Monday 21 September), you'll find the team from Churches Together on High Cross from 10:00 - 16:00 complete with a gazebo and leaflets, celebrating International Day of Peace.

Background

The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by the United Nations General Assembly. Two decades later, in 2001, the General Assembly unanimously voted to designate the Day as a period of non-violence and cease-fire.
