New Heritage and History Group Launches at Truro Cathedral

A newly formed Heritage and History Volunteer Group at Truro Cathedral is bringing together a dedicated team of volunteers and a growing community keen to explore the cathedral’s rich cultural past.

The group, led by volunteers Faye, Michael, David and Liz, (pictured) has been created to celebrate and share the cathedral’s heritage through a programme of talks, events and discussions. Interest has been high, with many people signing up to join the new mailing list and take part in future activities. To join the mailing list please sign up below

In a message to supporters, organisers expressed their thanks for the response so far, noting how encouraging it is to see such enthusiasm for Cornwall’s history, culture and heritage.

The group’s first event took place on 15 May, when the Cathedral’s Director of Music, James, delivered a talk titled “Energy, Excellence and Eccentricity – A History of Music at Truro Cathedral.” The evening sold out and marked a successful beginning for the volunteer group.

The talk offered a lively exploration of the cathedral’s musical background, bringing together historical material, music and storytelling.

Faye reflected on the evening, saying: “What a fantastic evening! James Anderson Besant had the audience spellbound from the very start. His talk included some incredible pieces of music, historical documents and some wonderful tales of organists of the past.”

Her comments highlighted the atmosphere of the event, which brought to life not only the cathedral’s musical traditions but also the personalities and stories behind them.

The group is now planning a programme of talks to begin in September, with more details expected soon.

Organisers are keen for the series to reflect the interests and knowledge of the wider community. They are inviting suggestions for topics and would welcome hearing from anyone who has ideas or who might be interested in contributing to future talks.
