Repair Work Commences Following Storm Goretti

Last week we were delighted to see the scaffold erected to enable repairs to the Chapter House roof, which sustained damage during Storm Goretti in January.

Inspections and assessments were undertaken following the storm, with the first phase of repair works scheduled to commence next week, being undertaken by local roofing specialists. The works will address damage caused by the severe weather to the hips of the Chapter House roof and help ensure the continued preservation of the cathedral's fabric.

Storm Goretti caused additional damage to the cathedral’s Western Nave ridge. Work to rectify this cannot take place until the spring, and we pray that the winter is kind to the cathedral with no further damage sustained.

We are grateful to our insurers for their support with the cost of repairing the damage. Approximately £130,000 of damage was caused in January, and our insurers are covering £100,000 of this sum. If you can assist us with this shortfall, we would welcome your donation.

We are pleased to report that the cathedral suffered no notable damage during Storm Austen, despite the challenging weather conditions experienced across Cornwall. We know that not everyone was so fortunate.

Amidst the repair work, we are delighted to update that after several delays, construction of the cathedral's new accessible entrance is approaching completion. This significant project will improve access for all visitors, enabling more people to participate fully in the life of the cathedral.

Sean O’Neill, Chief Operating Officer, said:

"We are relieved that the cathedral came through Storm Austen without incident and are looking forward to progressing repairs following Storm Gorreti. Any and all support with the shortfall in the repair costs will make a tremendous difference.

The completion of the accessible entrance project will mark an important milestone in our commitment to welcoming everyone to the cathedral. We are grateful to the private donors who made this project possible"

The repair work is not expected to cause disruption to worship, visitors or the cathedral's programme of events. We thank our congregation and community for their patience and support as these important projects are carried out.
