Truro Cathedral and Truro School Announce Evolution of the Senior Chorister Programme (Ages 13–18)
Truro Cathedral and Truro School are pleased to announce the next phase in the development of the Senior Chorister Programme, marking an exciting new chapter in their longstanding partnership.
From September 2026, Truro Cathedral will introduce a parallel boys’ programme for Senior Choristers (ages 13–18) to match its current nationally-regarded girls’ programme. This evolution reflects a shared commitment to offering high-quality, inclusive musical opportunities.
“This development ensures that we can support both boys’ and girls’ singing in the 13-18 age range in the way that best nurtures their vocal potential,” said James Anderson-Besant, the cathedral’s Director of Music. “In introducing a boys’ programme alongside our existing girls’ and age 8-13 programmes, we can support young singers across a wide age range and give our choristers, who come from all walks of life in Cornwall, musical training which will set them up for life.”
The new structure will include three weekly rehearsals for Senior Choristers. Two rehearsals will be gender-specific (all-girl or all-boy), and one will be mixed, bringing all senior choristers together.
“Our partnership with Truro Cathedral continues to be a jewel in the musical, spiritual, and community landscape of Cornwall,” said Zoe Jobling, Truro School’s Deputy Head (Partnerships and Co-Curriculum). “This evolution builds on an already thriving programme and reflects our commitment to excellence, opportunity, and equity for every child.”
Applications for the evolved Senior Chorister Programme will open in January 2026. These are open to girls who will be in Year 9 in September 2026, and boys who will be in Years 9–13 from September 2026.
As part of the lead-up to the changes, children who are interested in finding out more about becoming a chorister are invited to attend the annual ‘Be a Senior Chorister for a Day’ event on Thursday, 6 November 2025.
This immersive experience offers a glimpse into the life of a Senior Chorister, from morning rehearsal through to school lessons, and concluding with a short service of Evensong, where participants will have the opportunity to sing alongside the Cathedral Choir.
