Truro Cathedral celebrates Volunteers Week 2025

Last week the cathedral celebrated National Volunteers’ Week (02 - 08 June 2025).  This is a UK-wide campaign to celebrate and recognise the contributions of volunteers. Thousands of people across the country volunteer every year, enabling charities and voluntary organisations to help build stronger, more compassionate communities. Without volunteers organisations simply couldn’t do all the amazing things they do, and Truro Cathedral is one of them.

We started the week on Lemon Quay with a cathedral stand as part of Truro Volunteers Day. This event brings together around 30 different groups all promoting volunteering opportunities. We had a wonderful afternoon and met some lovely people who we may see again as they start their volunteering journey with us.

On Monday we celebrated with a special Choral Evensong. Giving thanks for our volunteers’ commitment through prayer and song, followed by tea and cake!

To close the week, on Sunday we invited all to a special long table lunch where team members, volunteers, visitors and congregation joined together to share lunch. We had a great turn out with a full table. The attendees included some of our longest serving volunteers along with some of our newest recruits from across all volunteer groups of the cathedral encompassing flower arrangers, bellringers, gardeners, welcomers, chaplains and guides.

Throughout the week it has been heart warming to spend so much time thanking our volunteers. Not only for the time they give, but for their support, encouragement, guidance and sense of humour! It’s an honour to be able to celebrate this valued group and ensure that they continue to be established as an integral part in the cathedral community.
