Truro Cathedral receives significant support from Cathedral Music Trust
Truro Cathedral is delighted to announce that it has recently been awarded significant grants for music. These awards will play a vital role in supporting and developing the cathedral's music programme, ensuring that choral music continues to flourish and remains at the heart of worship, education and community engagement.
The grants will be celebrated during a service at Truro Cathedral on Sunday 20 September, giving thanks for the generosity of the donors whose support helps sustain cathedral music.
£41,900 awarded to support Truro Cathedral's music programme
The first award of £29,400 over two years has been made through the Cathedral Music Support Programme and includes the Edington Festival Award (£3,000), specifically supporting chorister training. A further grant of £12,500 has been awarded towards the core costs of the cathedral's assistant director of music.
The funding comes at an important time for the cathedral's music department as it continues to develop opportunities for young singers and invest in the future of its choir. Together, the grants will support the ongoing growth of the programme, help ensure high-quality musical training remains accessible to choristers, strengthen the cathedral's music department, and support its wider contribution to the community.
The assistant director of music plays an important part in maintaining the musical life of the cathedral while helping to nurture the next generation of singers and musicians. This funding will support the cathedral's work with schools and communities across Cornwall.
James Anderson-Besant, director of music at Truro Cathedral, said:
"This award will enable us to forge a new and innovative model for chorister training and development, enabling us to welcome 13-18 year-old boys to sing alongside our senior girls and back row. It will fund specialist singing tuition, supporting a successful transition to our new, fully integrated music programme.
We are very grateful for the additional award, which will help sustain the work of the assistant director of music. This crucial role delivers most of the organ playing in the cathedral, supports our team of choristers and early-career choral scholars, and develops our links with the community through singing workshops in local schools.”
Giving Thanks
Truro Cathedral is immensely grateful to the Cathedral Music Trust, and all those whose generosity makes these grants possible. These awards will help secure the future of choral music at Truro Cathedral, supporting young singers, developing musical excellence and strengthening the cathedral's engagement with schools and communities across Cornwall.
