Truro Cathedral welcomes new organ scholar Jeremy Wan
Truro Cathedral is pleased to welcome organ scholar, Jeremy Wan, for the 2024-25 academic year.
The organ scholar plays an important role in the choral music tradition at Truro Cathedral. The role supports the director and assistant director of music in the daily rehearsal and training of Truro Cathedral Choir’s choristers. This includes planning the service music, directing and accompanying two of the seven weekly services sung by the choir. The organ scholar also helps to oversee the administration of the music department, look after the music library and assist with hosting visiting recitalists.
Jeremy is an organist, saxophonist and composer. Last year he held the organ scholarship post at Guildford Cathedral.
“The Guildford organ scholarship was very enjoyable. It was a lot of work and a real learning curve for me, but I really enjoyed it and am hoping this will be the same.”
Jeremy recently completed his postgraduate studies at the University of Glasgow with a distinction in Musicology under the supervision of John Butt. During his time in Glasgow, he served as the organ scholar accompanying the University Chapel Choir and was the director of music at All Saints, Bearsden.
Discussing his accomplishments, Jeremy is proud to have worked with the Scottish Opera, Glasgow Cathedral Choral Society and the University’s Choral Societies.
Looking ahead to his post at Truro Cathedral, he said “The thing I am looking forward to the most is playing the magnificent Father Willis organ and accompanying the choir, which is one of the best choirs in the country, as well as teaching the probationers here too. I am also looking forward to Christmas and Easter and being part of the big services here and playing a lot during Evensong which will happen three times a week for me.”
Apart from completing his organ scholarship post, Jeremy is excited to spend time in Truro and explore Cornwall having never been to Truro before (apart from for the interview!).
In his spare time, you’ll most likely find Jeremy in the kitchen cooking up new and exciting recipes which he thinks his new housemates are going to have to “suffer” through!
Jeremy got a taste for playing at Truro Cathedral with an early organ recital last week alongside assistant director of music, Andrew Wyatt. You can listen to that here YouTube.
There will be plenty of occasions over the next year for you to hear Jeremy play the organ here at Truro Cathedral.
Truro Cathedral would like to thank the Headley Trust for their generous continued support of the organ scholarship role.
