Oferen an Dasserghyans (Mass of the Resurrection)

‘Oferen an Dasserghyans’ or ‘The Mass of the Resurrection’ is a new Mass Setting, the first to be written completely in Cornish, to be premiered in the cathedral on 3 June.

This is a significant moment for the Church in Cornwall and for the Cornish language. Written by Mike O'Connor, it is a people's Mass that anyone can sing, based on Cornish music and folk song melodies. The music is tuneful, beautiful and easy to learn, and we hope that everybody will be able to join in. It will be celebrated on the Eve of the Feast of St Petroc, led by the Truro Cathedral Choir, and will be the first time, as far as anybody knows, that the Eucharist will have been conducted completely in Cornish.

In the pre-Reformation period, when Cornish was widely spoken, the Mass would have been said in Latin, with only the Lord’s Prayer, maybe the Words of Distribution said in Cornish, and little else. So we really are creating something new.

A full English translation will be provided in the service book alongside the Cornish text. All are welcome, fluent Cornish-speakers and those who know no Cornish at all.
