Talk by Dr Joanna Mattingly on Christmas Customs from Medieval Times
Organised by The Friends of Truro Cathedral, in her talk Dr Mattingly will explore many Christmas customs like Wassail, Morris Dancing and Mummers going back to the medieval period. The customs are often associated with houses not churches and holly, ivy and extra candles decorated the latter. Carols were avidly collected by Davis Gilbert and William Sandys in the early nineteenth century and originated as circle dances, while the Christmas bush stood in for the later Christmas tree. Dr Joanna Mattingly has lived in Cornwall for over 40 years and has spent much of this time studying its churches. She is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and a Member of the Cornwall Historic Churches Trust.
